Most teams that look for an Intercom alternative are reacting to the bill, not the product. Intercom charges per seat and then $0.99 for every Fin outcome, and an outcome includes a customer who simply does not ask for more help after Fin answers (Intercom pricing, checked September 2026). If that is your reason, the first thing to compare in any alternative is the unit you pay for: seats, resolutions, sessions, credits or a flat fee.

This list covers seven products whose pricing pages we read in September 2026. It is not ranked. We are one of the seven, which is a conflict of interest, so we have tried to be plainer about our gaps than about anyone else's. Prices are as published on each vendor's page; they change, so click through before you budget.

What Intercom costs, for reference

Intercom's Essential, Advanced and Expert plans cost $29, $85 and $132 per seat per month billed annually, with higher monthly-billing prices. Fin is $0.99 per outcome. SMS, WhatsApp, phone and email campaigns are pay-as-you-go. Intercom also sells Fin on its own for other helpdesks, with no seat cost and a minimum monthly commitment.

Zendesk

Zendesk is the closest like-for-like replacement if you use Intercom as a full helpdesk. From Zendesk's pricing page (checked September 2026): Support Team at US$19, Suite Team at US$55 and Suite Professional at US$115 per agent per month billed yearly, with Enterprise by quote. Suite plans add messaging, live chat, telephony and AI agents. AI agents are billed per automated resolution, meaning a request resolved without escalation to a human, but the price is not on the page. The marketplace lists 1,800+ apps and integrations.

Fits: teams that need tickets, email, phone and SLAs. Watch: the AI cost needs a quote, so you cannot model it from the website.

Freshdesk

From Freshdesk's pricing page (checked September 2026): Growth at $19, Pro at $55 and Enterprise at $89 per agent per month billed annually. Freddy AI Agent pricing is by session, with the first 500 sessions included and additional sessions at $49 per 100. Freddy AI Copilot, the agent-assist add-on, is $29 per agent per month billed annually.

Fits: ticket-based teams that want predictable AI usage packs rather than per-resolution billing. Watch: a session is not a resolution, so you pay for conversations the AI does not solve.

Help Scout

From Help Scout's pricing page (checked September 2026): a free plan for up to 5 users with one inbox and one Docs site, then Standard at $25, Plus at $45 and Pro at $75 per user per month (the page has a monthly/annual toggle with 16% off annual). Standard includes live chat, SMS, WhatsApp, Instagram and Messenger. AI Answers is an add-on at $0.75 per resolution. Help Scout counts a resolution only when the customer gets an AI response and does not escalate, search the knowledge base, ask more questions or say they need more help. Pro lists SSO/SAML and HIPAA compliance.

Fits: email-first teams that want a simple shared inbox. Watch: still per-resolution AI pricing, though with a narrower definition of a resolution than Intercom's.

Crisp

From Crisp's pricing page (checked September 2026): a free plan with 2 seats, then Mini at $45, Essentials at $95 and Plus at $295 per month per workspace, with 4, 10 and 20+ seats included and extra agents at $10 a month. Paid plans include AI credits of $5, $25 and $75, which Crisp estimates at around 90, 450 and 1,350 automated conversations. Essentials adds the omnichannel inbox (WhatsApp Business, Instagram, SMS and others); Plus adds ticketing and 100+ integrations.

Fits: small teams that want a multichannel inbox at a flat workspace price. Watch: check how usage beyond the included credits is billed. Our Crisp comparison has more detail.

tawk.to

From tawk.to's pricing page (checked September 2026): live chat, ticketing, a knowledge base and a contacts CRM are free. Removing branding is $29 a month. AI Assist, a chatbot that answers from your knowledge base and shortcut FAQs, starts at $29 a month, with a forever-free tier for low chat volume. tawk.to also hires out human chat agents at $1 per hour. Messaging and phone channels are marked beta.

Fits: budget-constrained teams. Watch: AI Assist tiers above the entry price are not detailed on the pricing page. More in our tawk.to comparison.

Forethought

From Forethought's pricing page (checked September 2026): Team, Professional and Enterprise plans, all by quote, priced as "a blend of platform access fees and an outcome-based pricing cost". It sits on top of an existing helpdesk (its integrations page lists Zendesk, Salesforce, ServiceNow, Intercom and others) and adds agents for answering, triage, QA and knowledge-gap detection. Zendesk's pricing page now describes "Forethought AI agents by Zendesk".

Fits: large support organisations that want to keep their helpdesk and add AI across chat, email, voice and Slack. Watch: no public prices, and a proof-of-value process instead of a trial. See our Forethought comparison.

LayBuild

LayBuild is an AI agent, not a helpdesk. It answers from files, listed URLs and Q&A pairs on a web widget, WhatsApp and a REST API. Plans are Starter at ₹1,499, Pro at ₹3,999 and Premium at ₹9,999 per month (₹1,199, ₹3,199 and ₹7,999 billed annually), with 1,500, 8,000 and 20,000 conversations included and no per-resolution fee. Model token costs depend on the LLM provider configured. Strict knowledge-base mode is always on: with no retrieved sources, or when fewer than 25% of an answer's stemmed words appear in the sources, the customer gets a fixed "I do not have specific information about that" reply. You can pick the LLM provider and self-host the open-source stack.

The gaps are large, and you should know them before shortlisting us. There is no ticketing system, no email, Slack, SMS or voice channel, and no Zendesk, HubSpot or Salesforce integration. There is no knowledge sync or crawling; you upload files or list URLs, capped at 10 to 50 documents and 5 to 50 URLs by plan. Retrieval is English-first. API tools are called with fixed defaults after the answer, not chosen by the model. Learned answers publish without human approval. Webhooks are not retried. There is no SSO and no SOC 2, HIPAA, ISO 27001 or GDPR certification, and no free plan or trial.

Fits: teams that want a grounded bot on their site or WhatsApp at a fixed INR price, alongside or instead of a helpdesk. Watch: everything in the previous paragraph. More in LayBuild vs Intercom.

How to shortlist

Start with the question of whether you need a helpdesk. If you need tickets, email and SLAs, your shortlist is Zendesk, Freshdesk and Help Scout, and the AI pricing unit (resolution, session) is the next filter. If you mostly need a website or WhatsApp bot, Crisp, tawk.to and LayBuild are the ones to compare, and the questions become channel coverage and how the bot is constrained. If you have a large helpdesk you are not leaving, Forethought or Fin-on-your-helpdesk are the options.

Then run your own numbers. Take last month's conversation count, estimate the share the AI would handle, and price it under each unit. The unit usually matters more than the headline price.
